Give God Your Best

Giving God Our Best

In the course of time, Adam and Eve began to raise a family. Their first child was Cain and then Abel was born to them. In Genesis 4 we read, “So it came about in the course of time that Cain brought an offering to the LORD of the fruit of the ground. 4Abel, on his part also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of their fat portions. And the LORD had regard for Abel and for his offering; 5but for Cain and for his offering He had no regard. So Cain became very angry and his countenance fell. 6Then the LORD said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? 7″If you do well, will not your countenance be lifted up? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door; and its desire is for you, but you must master it.” 8Cain told Abel his brother. And it came about when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him.” There are several applications we could make from this account. The one I want us to focus on is why God accepted Abel’s offering and not Cain’s. The account simply says Cain “brought some food from the ground as a gift to God.” Abel, on the other hand, we are told brought of the “fat portions” of the firstborn of his flock. Simply put, Cain gave God what he thought was “good enough” while Abel gave God his best.

In our daily lives we need to give God our very best. Our best effort at resisting Satan and his temptations, our very best example to others what a true Christian looks like in the way he talks, and the deeds he does. There is a hymn entitled, “Give of your Best to the Master” in which we sing of doing this very thing, giving God our very best. Throughout the Bible God has emphasized He must come first in our lives and we must give Him the best we can in our service, worship, and obedience to His will.
