God’s Wrath Toward Sin

“Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6The LORD was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. 7The LORD said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, from man to animals to creeping things and to birds of the sky; for I am sorry that I have made them.” 8But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD.” It is important to notice God’s attitude toward what had happened to His creation. It began perfect, God declaring it, “very good”. Then Eve allowed Satan to deceive her and she disobeyed God and got her husband Adam to do the same. This was the very first sin and Adam and Eve were the only two people on all the face of the earth. However, as time passed and Adam and Eve’s family grew, more and more people disobeyed God until it got to the point that God saw nothing but evil on all the earth. So prevalent was man’s evil that God was made sorry He had created man. That which had brought Him great joy now brought great sorrow. It not only made God sorry He had made man but it caused Him to determine to destroy this creation that was no longer as He had made. In verse 8 we read, “But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.” Noah was not perfect, but he was a man of faith. (See Hebrews 11:7) We are told in Genesis 6:9 he was a righteous man, blameless in his time and that “he walked with God”.

God’s first thought was to destroy all living flesh from the earth. But because of Noah God determined He could “start over” using this man to save the human race. In God’s mercy He had Noah preach repentance for the 120 years it took for him and his sons to build the ark. But men’s hearts were so defiled by sin they refused to listen. In doing so they left themselves subject to God’s wrath. God would bring a catastrophic flood upon the earth and destroy all living flesh except Noah, his family and the animals God instructed him to take into the ark. Can you imagine the people begging to gain access to the ark as the waters rose swiftly?

One of the great problems many people have is understanding that God is indeed a God of love. But, He is also a God of wrath towards those who will not obey Him. He loves the individual but hates sin and cannot fellowship the sinner.
