In His Image

As we continue to read Genesis 1 we find God busy with His creative work. Two phrases become evident as we read the account. “And there was evening and there was morning”. Each day was designated this way. There is no reason whatsoever to think of these days being anything other than literal 24 hour days. As a matter of fact, if the evening time was epochs of time as some suggest, plant would not survive in the darkness for plant life needs light to live. The second phrase that is repeated is God pronouncing each day’s creation as “good”.

When we get to Genesis 1:26 we read, “Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness…”. As God looked at the things He had created on the sixth day, including man, He declared it to be “very good”. God was well pleased with mankind as He had created him. The key as to why God was so pleased with mankind is found in verse 26: we are created in God’s image. Man was created by God to think, reason, exercise choice, and display emotion. Mankind is the only part of God’s creation that can interact with God. We have the ability to bring God more glory than all the rest of His creation combined. We have the ability to “choose” to obey God and live in and for Him while the rest of His creation simply follows the laws of nature that govern their existence. As you read Genesis 1 and 2 you get the sense of the wonderful fellowship Adam and Eve had with God. God was pleased with His creation and man was happy walking with God and enjoying the beauties of the world God had created for him.
