Is the Bible the Word of God?

The Bible claims it is the divinely inspired word of God. “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17) The word “inspiration” comes from the Greek word theopneustos which literally means “God breathed”. The apostle Peter taught the early Christians about the inspiration of the scriptures this way. “for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.” (2 Peter 1:21) Peter also regarded the writings of the apostle Paul to be inspired of God. “and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation; just as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given him, wrote to you, 16as also in all his letters, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which the untaught and unstable distort, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction.” (2 Peter 3:15-16) The importance of believing the Bible is the word of God lies in one’s attitude towards the authority of the Bible as a guide to be followed unto one’s salvation. God desires all men to be saved and the Bible contains the truths whereby men are saved. “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “BUT THE RIGHTEOUS man SHALL LIVE BY FAITH.” (Romans 1:16-17)  The question before us is “Is the Bible the Word of God”? If it is, we must study it to be approved of God. (2 Timothy 2:15) We must also obey what it says. Jesus said, “Not everyone who says to Me, `Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter.22″Many will say to Me on that day, `Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’23″And then I will declare to them, `I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.’” (Matthew 7:21-23)

What evidence do we have that the Bible is the Word of God? First, there is the harmony of the Scriptures themselves. The Bible was written by 40 different men over a period of about 1500 years. Yet, there is an amazing continuity seen in it. The Bible is in complete harmony with itself and with all known true science. No one single scientific discovery has been found to be in contradiction with the history and archeology of the Bible. As a matter of fact, many scientific discoveries have been made using the Bible as a guide. The deep ocean currents were discovered because of a reference to the “paths of the seas” found in Psalm 8:8. Some 1500 years before the birth of Christ Moses wrote, “the life is in the blood”. (Leviticus 17:11) Today, doctors rely heavily on blood tests to determine illness and disease in the human body. Perhaps the most meaningful evidence for the Bible being from God is the number of manuscripts from which we get our translations of the Bible. No other book comes close to having manuscripts and pieces of manuscripts as does the Bible.

The Bible without question is the word of God.
