The beauty and blessings of God’s perfect creation is destroyed as we follow the Genesis account into chapter 3. God had told Adam and Eve they were free to eat of any tree in the garden except for the tree that was in the middle of the garden, the “Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil”. God told them that “in the day you eat thereof you will surely die”. (Genesis 2:17) As we begin chapter 3, we find, “Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made.” Satan, in the form of a serpent deceived Eve by contradicting what God had told Adam and Eve and through his deception convinced Eve to disobey God and take of the forbidden fruit. She then gave some of the fruit to Adam and he ate of it also. Their eyes were opened and now they knew shame because they were naked and also “feared” God while before they had perfect, wonderful fellowship with Him. When they heard God walking in the garden they hid themselves from Him. God called out to Adam, “Where are you”? Adam responded, “I heard You walking in the garden and I was afraid because I was naked.” God asked Adam, “Who told you that you were naked? Did you eat fruit from the tree from which I commanded you not to eat?” Interestingly, Adam tried to place the blame on everyone but himself. He answered, “”The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me from the tree, and I ate.” Notice that Adam blamed both God and Eve. God’s question to Eve shows the heartbreak of God due to man’s disobedience. “Then the LORD God said to the woman, ‘What is this you have done?’” (Genesis 3:13) This is just another way of asking Eve, Do you realize what you have done? You have broken My perfect creation. It will no longer be pure and perfect as I created it. Indeed, God’s perfect creation, including mankind would never be perfect again. Sin had entered the world and Satan would become the “ruler” of darkness and this world. God placed curses upon man, the woman and the serpent and even a curse upon the earth due to man’s sin.
The lesson we need to gain form thinking about man’s fall is that we must recognize our enemy and be prepared to resist him with the help of God and His written word.
