Redeems

“Knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, 19but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.” (1 Peter 1:18-19) The word “redeem” means to “buy back”. We have sold our souls to sin and Satan and in doing so we have placed ourselves in a state of condemnation. But God has made it possible for us to be “redeemed” by the precious blood of Christ given on the cross of Calvary. We all understand the idea of redeeming something from a pawn shop. We take an item of value such as a watch to a pawn shop and are given a certain amount of money. We are given a “pawn ticket” or a “redemption ticket”. We can later come back and “redeem” that item but we must pay more than what we were given for it. Our souls are the most precious possession we have. We sell them for the “wages of sins” (Romans 6:23) But by the precious blood of Christ the redemption price for our souls has been paid. This is something we cannot do for ourselves. How wonderful are these words found in Ephesians 1:7-8. “7In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace 8which He lavished on us.” The cross of Christ makes it possible for God to “lavish” His grace upon us in redeeming us from our sins through His Son Jesus. And in Titus 2:14 we find “who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds.” Being redeemed by the blood of Christ is a great blessing but it brings responsibility also. We are to live lives of purity in obedience to Christ. “Redeemed and so happy in Jesus, redeemed by the blood of the Lamb.” Is part of a song we sing in praise to God for His wonderful gift of Jesus. Have you been redeemed?
